Fun – Open Sky Group’s Seventh Core Value
In this article on core values, let’s discuss the last one, Fun. We define this core value as “a genuine passion for life, enjoyable to work with and having an interesting life outside of work.”
On the surface, there doesn’t appear to be any business benefit from employees having fun. And you might think it’s strange that a company would value people who like to have fun. We have found that these kinds of people are much better equipped to handle the stress of making a lot of ship happen!
Knowing when to take a break
Everyone needs R&R to be healthy. While employing workaholics has benefits for the bottom line, that kind of lifestyle generally burns people out, causing them to be people you don’t enjoy working with and often driving customers away.
Laughter can be the best medicine
People who know how to have fun tend to be able to laugh as well. Laughter is a great stress reliever.
Better Relationships
The other side effect of people who have an interesting life outside of work is that they end up building better relationships with co-workers and even customers when those common interests are shared. These strengthened relationships only help to fulfill our purpose, which is to work with people who we enjoy working with. At Open Sky Group, we’ve got hunters, fishers, bakers, chefs, painters, model builders, woodworkers, blacksmiths, scuba divers, metalworkers, foodies, bloggers, comic book collectors, homebrewers, gamers, origamists, ham radio operators, numismatists, mountain bikers, musicians, underwater videographers, bourbon stewards, pilots, and even a fully licensed pyrotechnics expert! And that’s just a few of the things we do outside of work.
